Bukit Larut, formerly known as Maxwell Hill, is a popular highland destination in Malaysia. Located at an altitude of 1,250 m above sea level approximately 10 km from Taiping town in Perak; it is the wettest area in the country which experiences the highest rainfall. Bukit Larut is also home to the oldest hill station in Malaysia, built by William Edward Maxwell, a British Assistant Resident in Perak, in 1884 to provide a cool retreat for the colonial officials. In 1910, the hill resort was gazetted as a permanent forest reserve.

The Tea Garden House, situated midway up the hill, was once the office of a tea plantation. However, when their tea plants did not grow very well here, the British shifted their agricultural endeavour to the Cameron Highlands, where the Boh Tea Plantation is now. All types of Malaysian flowers including the rare giant fishtail palm thrive here. The golden sunflowers grown here are the largest in the country.

Private vehicles are not allowed up Bukit Larut. But, you can go up to the summit by using Land Rover service and the fees are RM 6 for adult and RM 3 for children. The roads up the hill is steep and narrow with 72 sharp bends, so make sure you sit tight as the vehicle cruise up the hill. The Land Rover operational hour is from 8.30 am to 5 pm daily with a frequency of 1 hour.

By Car

From KL by E1 PLUS highway, take EXIT 146 Changkat Jering. Turn left onto Route 60 toward Taiping. On the crossroad, go straight onto Route A109 Jalan Air Kuning. Follow the signs to Zoo Taiping or Taman Tasik Taiping. After that find sign to Bukit Larut.

By Train

Take KTM ETS/Komuter to KTM Kamunting Station. After arrived at the station, take a taxi/Grab to Bukit Larut.
